Elzie Crisler Segar died from liver disease at the early age of 43 in 1938. His assistant, Bud Sagendorf, took over the Popeye strip and continued it for two years.

The National Cartoonist Society created the Elzie Segar Award in his honor. This award is presented to an individual who has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning.Popeye pictured eating spinach is the celebrated on the Google.com main page for today, December 8.
