Elzie Crisler Segar died from liver disease at the early age of 43 in 1938. His assistant, Bud Sagendorf, took over the Popeye strip and continued it for two years.

The National Cartoonist Society created the Elzie Segar Award in his honor. This award is presented to an individual who has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning.Popeye pictured eating spinach is the celebrated on the Google.com main page for today, December 8. Honoring E.C. Segar’s birthday back in 1894, the celebrated cartoonist was the creator of Popeye the sailor man. Today is the 115th anniversary of E.C. Segar’s birthday, which is why Google E.C. Google have depicted the cartoon character, which first entered the public consciousness back in 1929 in Segar’s newspaper comic strip, in a typically feisty pose, to honor Elzie Crisler Segar on what would have been his 115th birthday.
